CHS Briefs: December 2024

We’ve had a lot of fun in November with the Proctorsville Ghost Walk as well as a community Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. We’re excited about our new partnerships with the Cavendish Library as it gives us a terrific space for workshops in the off season.

UPCOMING EVENTS: The following CHS programs are free and open to the public.

December 14 (Saturday): Holiday Fiesta at the Cavendish Library 10-12, 573 Main St. Proctorsville. We’re repurposing some old books, including hymnals by making beautiful ornaments-angels, hearts, chains and more along with other projects, and will even have a pinata and special treats.

December 20 (Friday): Day long Young Historian workshops at Cavendish Town Elementary School. This year’s theme is Winter Solstice celebrations in Asia.

February: In honor of Black History: The story of Cavendish’s Peter Tumbo and the history of African trade beads. Workshop to follow talk on making paper African trade beads. Date TBA.

February 15 (Saturday): Chocolate and Valentines; The history of chocolate with Maren Muter. Maren is a Cavendish resident and chocolatier, who has dazzled our taste buds at various events with her hot chocolate and the most delicious treats. She is the owner of That Chocolate.

In January, we will be announcing our programs for the spring and early summer. We know that many have enjoyed the herb and plant medicinal series with Dr. Charis Boke and we already have some ideas for 2025.

ANNUAL APPEAL: Late November and December is when CHS launches its annual appeal. Please take this time to renew your membership and/or make a donation.

Dear Friend:

As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change. Yet for the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) the changes are in a very positive direction.

We’re been working with the Cavendish Library and have been holding successful workshops there. In fact, it’s become our home away from home since the museum needs to close for over six months each year due to a lack of heat. We already have three workshops planned, one for December and two in February.

In addition to planning upcoming workshops, we are also doing a considerable amount of archival work and making new discoveries. We will be sharing these in the newsletters and through the monthly “Briefs.”

We have been working with Dartmouth College, who is conducting research on the impact of the July 2023 floods in the Black River Valley. In revisiting the town’s history of past floods,  it’s a good reminder of why we do the work we do so that succeeding generations will learn from our experiences.

Our Young Historians program continues to foster good stewardship. It’s the unseen work the students do that often goes unnoticed, such as helping to repair Greven Field from repeated flooding in 2023 and 2024.

While we always need funds, this appeal isn’t just about money but the many ways you can support CHS. You can play an integral part by

• Becoming a board member

• Donating to the annual appeal campaign (see attached form), specifying how you want your contribution to be used.

• Renewing your annual membership.

• Volunteering to help with our various programs.

This is your historical society so don’t hesitate to contact us about your interests as well as how you can help us continue our work.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season, and a safe and happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Director
