CHS Briefs July 1, 2021

UPCOMING EVENTS: Please note that any Vermont Covid requirements in place at the time of the event apply.

July 11 (Sunday): The Museum 1958 Main St, RT 131, will be open from 2-4 pm for the season.

 

July 31 (Saturday): 11th Annual Cavendish Town Wide Tag Sale. 9-2. CHS will be at Svec Park (Proctorsville Green)

 

August 15 (Sunday): What’s in the CHS Medicine Cabinet? We’ve done a study of the potions, notions and medicines that have been in the Museum’s exhibit. Talk begins at 2 pm at the Museum.

 

September 12 (Sunday): Annual Phineas Gage Walk & Talk, meet at the CHS Museum at 2 pm. Walk portion is about a mile and a half and includes a visit to the site of the accident.

 

October 3 (Sunday): Fitton-the Mill, the Firebug, and Everything in Between. Starting at 2 pm at the Museum, there will be a talk on the Fitton (Spring) Mill, the town that grew up around it-Fittonsville- and the man Robert “Firebug” Fitton who was responsible for its demise and lots of other property in the town of Cavendish. The talk will be following by a walk out to the site where the Mill, boarding house, and other structures once stood. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for walking on uneven terrain.

 

October 10 (Sunday): Indigenous People’s Day program, 2 pm at the Museum. Last day the Museum is open for the season.

 

December: Christmas Ghost Walk Proctorsville. Date and time to be announced.

 

YOUNG HISTORIANS: Summer is planning time for Young Historians. We’re hoping to do a variety of trips this coming fall. In the meantime, as part of the Stewardship program-Preserve and Serve, our students will be helping with a number of projects including RiverSweep, caring for the cemeteries and helping homeowners with end of season chores.

If you have any of the following items you would like to donate for this program, please contact us at the numbers above:

• Leaf rakes

• Ladies size-one size fits all- gardening gloves (must be new)

• Utility buckets with spill-free spouts. 9 quart size. Must be of durable material. Gently used is fine.

 Cavendish Village Ghost Walk:
We had approximately 100 people join  us for the first of what we hope will be an annual midsummer night’s eve  event.

 

 Stone Church: Thank you to Dave Gallagher and Ana for finishing painting the front of the Church. Thank you to Doug McBride for the loan of the staging.

 

Museum: Bob Naess and Dave Stern are once again working on the doors of the Museum. Mainly inside work at this point. Thank you both.

 

CHS Cares Closet: The closet has lots of wonderful summer reads, as well as masks, games etc. Please stop by and take what you want. Everything is free.
