UPCOMING EVENTS: Proctorsville Christmas Ghost Walk

In 2020,  the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) had to cancel their planned ghost walk. In its place, was "A Christmas Eve Ghost Story" featuring both the Golden Stage Inn and its various ghosts as well as some of the local spirits. The story is available on-line at the CHS blog.

On Dec. 12 (Sunday), the 2021 Proctorsville Christmas Ghost Walk begins in front of the

Proctorsville War Memorial on Route 131 (close to the intersection of 131 and Depot St) at 7PM. The tour proceeds down Depot St., with information about what places are thought to be haunted. It ends at the Golden Stage Inn, where there will be a bonfire. What better place, and way, to learn about one of the most haunted inns in New England.

The tour is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated. This is an easy walk.  Please dress according to the weather and bring a flashlight. FMI: 802-226-7807 or margocaulfield@icloud.com

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING:
We’ve been decorating the Museum, Stone Church and War Memorial for the holidays. Candles are in the windows of the Museum thanks to Dave Gallagher and Ana Jacome. Ana also made the wreaths for the CHS Cares Closet. A very special thank you to Svetlana Phillips who made the wreaths and greenery and hung lights on the War Memorial and Stone Church.

It spite of snow squalls, CTES 3rd and 4th grade did an incredible job cleaning the leaves at Gethsemane Church. The 6th grade tackled the Proctor Cemetery while the 5th grade took care of fall chores for one of our local families.

We’re preparing for our final program of 2021 with our young historians. This year we will be following the Scandinavian tradition of feeding the birds at the end of the year to ensure a prosperous new year. Let’s hope it helps ensure a healthy 2022 for all.

The 2021 Christmas Eve Ghost Story will be posted to the CHS Blog on Christmas Eve. Some of our favorite ghosts and spirits are back, with a few "visitors."

ANNUAL APPEAL

November 26, 2021

Dear Friend:

Another year of Covid, yet the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) continues to document, provide programs with record breaking attendance, and leave a legacy for future generations. It is a message of hope for times when daily life, work and simple things, like shopping, can be a challenge.

We’re incredibly proud of our Young Historians, who are supporting our community through our Preserve & Serve program. They’ve done everything from raking leaves, helping to build a labyrinth and even digging to uncover old farm equipment. Fortunately, we can once again provide workshops in the school and take them on field trips.

Thanks to amazing volunteers, the doors of the Museum are finished-inside and out.  More coats of paint have been applied to the front of the Stone Church. The CHS “Cares Closet,” next to the Museum steps, has become an important stopping point for many in the community as they pick up masks, art supplies, history kits and much more.

We’ve expanded digital access by providing monthly bulletins for the Carmine Guica Young Historians (CGYH) program as well as “News Briefs” for CHS. These are available at the CHS blog, address above, as well as e-mailed to subscribers. If interested in receiving these updates, please e-mail us with the items you are interested in.

We can’t do this without your help. You can play an integral part by

• Donating to the annual appeal campaign (see attached form), specifying how you want your contribution to be used.

• Renewing your annual membership.

• Volunteering to help with our various programs. We are currently in need of volunteers to help with the archives.

• Donating gently used items to the CHS Closet (please call or e-mail and we’ll make arrangements to pick up items).

• Sharing family Covid journals and items that can be archived for future generations.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season, and a safe and happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Dan Churchill, President
